Imara Gabe Diaz leads the city of Hampton's Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion. While many cities and even companies have started offices or departments in recent years, Hampton's office has roots in work that began in the early 90s - and a different charge than many.

Their focus is community engagement, and recently have worked on efforts with residents to make sure their voices are heard when redevelopment projects are discussed in their neighborhood.

Restorative justice is at the core of Diaz and the office's work.

“It’s not going to be a one-and-done. If you want to do it right [then] you’ve got to take the time, you’ve got to slow it down, you’ve got to consider all the parties involved, impacted and that can support these efforts.

“That’s where the trust is built.”

Tuck was given a statue of 17th century Ndongo Queen Nzinga by Nhunga. The governor got a piece of art depicting a unity tree in return, with roots reaching into both the African and American continents.

There was a lot of talk of coming together, cultural exchange, economic partnership. There was also talk of history, with a shared past dating back 405 years. Malanje is the place of origin for the first African people forced to come to English North America in 1619, landing first in what is now Hampton. There are people here in Hampton today that trace their roots to some of those first bonded people. Some of them were in the room with us.

I spoke with Dionísio Fonseca, the minister of administration and territory. He had hopes of new educational and training opportunities to support a population that's expected to double in the next 25 years. But he also remarked on the historical significance of the relationship, of reconnecting.

The 32nd annual Cookie Carousel at St. Thomas More in Manhattan.The cookie sale is a yearly charity benefit, this year committed to Life Choice Ministries, Sunflower Children’s Collective (formerly CASA), and Catholic Charities. Cookies were $7 per pound, with craft sales also available as well. A jolly old elf is also in the building, meeting and taking pictures with good children that braved the cold to come out and see him.
