Manhattan man arrested after fleeing police, damaging RCPD vehicle

A Manhattan man was arrested Wednesday night after attempting to escape RCPD.

38-year-old James Watkins of Manhattan was taken into custody by Riley County police around 8:15 p.m. in the 1600 block of Fairchild Avenue. Watkins is accused of criminal property damage and fleeing from police. He was issued a $3,000 bond and is no longer held in the Riley County Jail.

RCPD Interim Public Information Officer Rachel Pate say officers filed a report stating Watkins struck a 46-year-old man with a wooden board in the 700 block of Kearney Avenue near 8:11 p.m. He is accused of also damaging a police vehicle before fleeing. Watkins has not been charged for aggravated battery at this time, but Pate says the full report on the incident has been forwarded to Riley County District Court.

In addition to the 46-year-old victim, RCPD and the State of Kansas are listed as victims in the case. A $900 loss is associated with the incident.
